Make relaxing your new norm!
Jan 23, 2024
For some people, the thought of relaxing causes anxiety.
If you are one of these people, then you can relate.
Sometimes relaxing is hard.
For a long time, my nervous system was not on board with chilling out.
I felt nonproductive, and relaxing created more anxiety because sitting still meant I was not getting things done, and by that, it meant I was not feeling safe.
Being productive meant I was working and moving towards a goal.
Plus, it was my way of distracting myself and not dealing with what didn't feel comfortable in my body—a dysregulated nervous system.
In kindergarten, I faked naps. While everyone dosed off to dreamland, I was off daydreaming. My body felt unsafe falling asleep, and I thought I might miss out on something! Plus, to me, sleeping back then was boring.
While I'm still not a big napper, I can relax, and my nervous system is more regulated these days.
I've learned to find peace within.
Yet, it's hard to relax when your inner chatter tells you, "You need to do more."
And if your need to do more is linked with an inner perfectionist - life can get overwhelming.
Exhausting your efforts to be perfect in everything you touch can lead to burnout.
Doing your best feels fantastic, and I'm all for it. Yet, sometimes, the inner judge will deplete you until you burn out and are no longer having fun because anxiety kicks in.
Relaxing recharges us.
A regulated nervous system is the doorway to an aligned and authentic self.
When we self-regulate, it's also a key to unlocking a door of inner wisdom.
Incredible things happen as we learn to listen and respond to our own signals rather than allowing our environment or fears to determine how we live.
When we take ownership of our life journey by tapping into our inner power, we can discover and experience aliveness—our aligned authentic self.
Here's to making relaxing the new norm!
